2013 Kids Summer Camps

eNRG Kayaking is hosting 5-day kids summer camps this summer!

Students will begin with an introduction to flatwater before progressing to the kayak roll, moving water, and ultimately a full day river experience. Group activities and fun games will ensure an exciting experience for everyone involved. Classes begin at 8 am and dismiss at 3 pm.

 eNRG Kayaking’s kids kayak program is a great way to improve skills while working in a supportive atmosphere with some of the best instructors in the state. eNRG Kayaking can provide all the equipment for these sessions, and all the equipment is available for purchase after the class.

eNRG Kids Kayak Team

The eNRG Kids Kayak Team’s mission is to develop the youth paddling community in the Pacific Northwest by introducing children and young adults to paddlesports.  Through the establishment of a year-round development and training program for children and young adults.  Young athletes will develop their skills with our elite coaches.

Kids will be grouped according to age and skill level.  Group 1 will be for children ages 8-12.  Group 2 will be for young adults ages 13-17.

As our young paddlers progress and develop their skills we will provide these individuals opportunities to take their talent to the next level.  Athletes will have the opportunity to attend training events and competitions such as the North American Junior Olympics and other regional events.

Meet our team:

Program Director

Sam Drevo – Sam was the head freestyle coach for the Junior Olympics. He will be leading clinics in freestyle, slalom, wildwater and swiftwater rescue, as well as mentoring athletes throughout the event.  Having been paddling for 26 years, and competed for the USA national team in all disciplines of whitewater sport.  Sam trained under the US Olympic coaches for six years, and won the extreme kayak world championships in 2001. Sam was ranked top 10 in the world in freestyle for 5 years.   With these accolades, Sam has dedicated his life to instruction and he returns every summer to the camp that gave him his start to train the next generation of youth paddling instructors. Sam is a ACA Instructor Trainer, a Rescue 3 Swift water Rescue Instructor, a Wilderness First Responder, and a Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor.

Coaches:

Kate Daniel- Learned to paddle at the largest outdoor center in the United States- Natahala Outdoor Center.  She moved to Portland two years ago to take a job at Reed College.  She has been paddling for six years and has been coached by some of the best instructors in the United States every summer in North Carolina and Tennessee.  She has worked her way up to a senior instructor teaching hundreds of kids in the process and is also a certified wilderness first responder.  She runs the Reed College kayak program with Sam and recently got back from an exploratory whitewater expedition to Turkey.

Niko Peha- Niko is an instructor at eNRG kayaking who has been teaching both kids and adults for over 3 year now. He began paddling in 2001 and has been progressing since in a variety of disciplines. He competed in slalom kayaking for 5 years, eventually rising to compete at the world level in the U.S., Canada, Australia and China. Since then he has moved on to focus more on running rivers and teaching others to kayak. He is ACA level 4 certified and has an in depth grasp of paddling technique from his years paddling slalom.”

Danielle Carvalho – A proud mother of two, ages seven and ten, Danielle is a highly experienced raft guide who has traveled extensively through the U.S. and Latin America.   Danielle will organize and actively participate in the trip as a chaperone and mentor.  With experience organizing youth outdoor trips for a private high school in Colorado, Danielle has an inside perspective on the ins and outs of traveling and working with youth. Danielle is a Wilderness First Responder, is a Rescue 3 Swiftwater Rescue Technician, and has Outdoor Leadership Training through the Outdoor Adventure Program @ OSU.

Eric Adsit - 7-year whitewater paddler and previous Head Instructor at the University of Vermont, Eric is a passionate and experienced instructor with multiple first descents to his name. He has trained in freestyle, wildwater, and extreme racing and enjoys introducing new people to the sport. Eric is an ACA Level 3 Whitewater Kayaking Instructor and Licensed Raft Guide. He is Swift Water Rescue, First Aid, and CPR certified.
